Tony spent 25 years (1984-2008) with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as its national college football writer.
Tony spent eight seasons with CBS Sports before joining the SEC Network when it launched in August of 2014.
Tony’s radio home in Atlanta is with WQXI, 680 The Fan, where he makes several appearances each week during the football season.
Tony has won numerous awards during his career as a sportswriter and broadcaster. In 1999 he was named the Georgia Sportswriter of the Year. Twice (1996, 2007) his television work was nominated for a Southern Regional Emmy Award. He is a past president of the Football Writers Association of America and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
On Jan. 8, 2009, Tony received the Bert McGrane Award from the Football Writers Association of America. The McGrane Award is considered to the Hall of Fame for college football writers and broadcasters and recognizes a lifetime contribution to the sport. The winners are recognized with a display at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.
In 2016 Tony was named to the Grady Fellowship, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia, his alma mater. In 2017 he received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Broadcasting & Cable from the DiGamma Kappa broadcast society at Georgia.
He is the author of five books on college football:

Tony lives in Dunwoody, Ga., with his wife, Maria, his high school sweetheart. Their daughter, Sara Catherine Barnhart, is a 2008 graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law. She serves as Director & Counsel for Brambles Limited in Atlanta.
Tony and Maria have now taken on the wonderful role of G-Dad and Abba for their granddaughter, Sloane Vivian Fletcher, who checked into the starting lineup of life on Aug. 23, 2012.
