The Life and Times of Larry Munson.
When Larry Munson decided to call it quits after an incredible 43 years as the radio voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, he said he would never write a book on his remarkable life. Fortunately for Georgia fans and college football fans everywhere, Larry changed his mind. I was honored when he asked me help him do it. I felt like I had just been given the keys to a national championship football team. All I had to do was not mess it up. For five months I met with Larry about three times a week and listened to his story. And what a story it is, beginning in his boyhood home in Minneapolis all the way to the Sportscasters Hall of Fame. Remember that Larry was 43 years old when he took the job at Georgia and was 86 when he retired. Those first 43 years include a lot of great stories. For example: Did you know that in his youth, Larry Munson was a good piano player? For a week he played in a band that backed up Frank Sinatra. Did you know that Larry lost his sense of smell at the age of two? It would later impact his time in the military during WWII. Larry spent two seasons as the radio voice of the Atlanta Braves and baseball was always his first love. In fact his mentor, Curt Gowdy, told Larry he would never make any money in broadcasting unless he got into baseball. But Larry stuck with the Braves for only two years after a fued with Milo Hamilton, the other guy in the booth. Larry finally gets a chance to tell his side of that story. "From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot" is full of those kinds of stories. Also included is a CD of Larry's 10 favorite calls as the voice of the Georgia Bulldogs. I hope you enjoy the book.
